The Arts in School Culture – NMKU Workshop and Conference on May 6, 2025
The Nordic countries have a strong tradition for prioritization of artistic and creative subjects in the primary and secondary school systems, and for acknowledging the importance of these subject matters in regards to the pupils’ learning, Bildung and access to communities.
Over the last decade however, there has been a strong focus on those subjects tested for and measured in the PISA Reports, notably in the STEM subjects, resulting in decreased focus on artistic and creative subjects, recruitment of teachers and development of the subjects. Consequently, music and culture schools across the Nordic region experience severe challenges in terms of making a solid evidence based (including both quantitative and qualitative data) case for putting an A for ‘arts’ into the STEM acronym, changing it to STEAM such as suggested by extensive research in the area across Europe.
The conference, The Arts in Nordic School Culture, is focused on innovative and productive cross sectorial collaborations between art and culture schools and public primary schools. During the first part the scene is set through presentations of data and research and the second part offers three concrete cases.
In connection to the conference the NMKU-network has its first workshop. The workshop allows the network members to make initial presentations of the cases they plan to include in the shared case collection, and to inquire further into the case format, including its dissemination potential.
